RECRUITING: Nacua brothers commit to BYU

Kai and Isaiah Nacua do different things well for different teams in high school football.

But the brothers will be together in college.

Kai Nacua, who will be a senior quarterback and safety at Liberty, and Isaiah Nacua, who will be a junior defensive end at Bishop Gorman, committed to Brigham Young on Tuesday, Liberty coach Rich Muraco said.

“I’m obviously close to the family. That was a big part of the decision if they could make it work,” Muraco said of the brothers committing together. “I’m happy for Kai and Isaiah.”

Muraco said the Cougars recruited Kai Nacua at linebacker.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound Kai Nacua helped Liberty win its second straight Sunrise Region title in 2011.

He passed for 1,420 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions and added 555 yards and six TDs rushing as a junior. But Nacua also was impressive in the secondary, picking off three passes including a 43-yard interception return for a TD in a 44-28 region semifinal win over Las Vegas.

“When they’ve had Kai come up and work out for them, he’s super athletic, he’s quick,” Muraco said. “When he works out with the individual coaches, he’s got a good size and frame on him. He’s a solid 6-2, 210-pound kid. They know that when they get him in the weight program, he’s going to bulk up and fit into that (linebacker) role.”

The 6-2, 230-pound Isaiah Nacua was a first-team All-Southwest League defensive end while helping the Gaels win their third straight Class 4A state title in 2011.
