Sierra Vista starts fast, routs Eldorado

From the very beginning Friday night, there was no doubt Sierra Vista and Eldorado were headed in opposite directions.

Eldorado, which allowed 50 points or more in each of the last two games, turned the ball over on just its fourth offensive play. Sierra Vista capitalized on the play and never looked back.

Damaen Bentley intercepted Jaime Rangel’s pass and raced 32 yards for the touchdown, and the Mountain Lions scored four times in the opening quarter en route to a 70-0 win over host Eldorado.

Sierra Vista’s first offensive play didn’t come until midway through the first quarter, but Bryan LaGrange made it count. The sophomore raced 57 yards for a touchdown to give the Mountain Lions an early 14-point lead.

“Everything went well from the beginning,” Sierra Vista coach John Foss said. “A game like this gives you a chance to play lots of players, and hopefully you play a clean game. We are just focused on what we need to do, and not get caught up in other crazy things.”

Isaiah Zavala scored a pair of touchdowns to close the first quarter, on runs of 2 and 10 yards, for Sierra Vista (3-0).

LaGrange added a 49-yard TD run later, and finished the night with 125 yards on just five trips. Lopaka Kolone had 57 yards rushing, and Tristan Jimenez added 50 yards rushing for Sierra Vista, which finished with 288 yards on the ground.

“The players have been working very hard, and paying attention to detail,” Foss said. “Yes, we do make mistakes, but the plan is to continue to get better each week.”

Eldorado (0-4) finished with just 54 yards on offense. The Sundevils’ longest play from scrimmage was 28 yards.
