Sylo Staton leads Spring Valley to victory

Spring Valley quarterback Sylo Staton had been waiting for Friday night for quite some time.

Staton, a transfer from Canyon Springs, hasn’t seen varsity action since late in the 2015 season.

Naturally, the senior was more than eager for his chance in a Grizzlies uniform.

Staton threw for 144 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 75 yards and another score and guided Spring Valley to a 34-14 victory over Eldorado.

“Am I pleased for a first game? Of course I am,” Spring Valley coach Marcus Teal said. “We did have chances to score, and missed them. We have got to continue to get better, and not rest on what happened Friday.”

Spring Valley made the most of their 14 first-half plays, and Staton threw touchdown passes of 31 yards to Marquelle Diggs and 40 yards to Jonathan Vazquez.

He ran 35 yards for another first-half score.

“I’m very impressed with his (Staton) play tonight,” Teal said. “He’s worked so hard everyday to get himself and his team in this position. Again, we have lots of work still ahead, but this win is a great start.”

Kevin Benoza also added a 15-yard score. The Grizzlies, who had just 37 yards in the opening quarter, finished the half with 215 total yards.

Eldorado pulled to within 27-14 late in the third quarter as Jaime Rangel hit Guillermo Hernandez for a 7-yard touchdown. But Staton found Diggs for another score three plays later.

Benoza led Spring Valley with 140 yards on 23 carries. Vasquez led Eldorado with 83 yards on 20 tries.
