Small schools: Boulder City claims 3A Southern Region title

Boulder City’s wrestling team had three individual champions on Saturday to claim the team title at the Class 3A Southern Region tournament at Overton.

Ladd Cox (152 pounds), Jimmy Dunagan (195) and Ryan Vanario (220) claimed titles for the Eagles, who finished with 213 points. Virgin Valley was second with 204, followed by Western (150) and Pahrump Valley (147).

Boulder City’s Cade Crowley was second at 170, and teammate Thorsten Balmer was second at 182.

Virgin Valley was in control early, winning titles in the four lightest weights. Ethan Woods (106), Rudy Cannon (113), Vicente Pinto (120) and Austin Workman (126) claimed individual titles for the Bulldogs, who got a second-place finish from Case Crandall at 138.

Boulder City had nine wrestlers advance to next week’s state tournament in Winnemucca. Virgin Valley had eight qualifiers, as the top four in each weight class head to state.

Pahrump Valley and Mojave each had two individual champions. Isaac Cruz (145) and Dylan Wright (160) placed first for the Trojans, and Sebastian James (170) and Mekhi Brown (182) won individual titles for the Rattlers.

Western’s Mackenzie Sulliban (132), Chaparral’s Marc Gonzalez (138) and Sunrise Mountain’s Jose Lara (285) were the other individual champions.

Class 2A

At Indian Springs, Tonopah wrestlers won three weight classes and finished second in four others as the Muckers racked up 161 points to win the Class 2A Southern Region tournament.

Austin Leach (113), Damian Paice (120) and Vance Day (160) each won a region title for Tonopah.

Pahranagat Valley and White Pine also had three champions each.

Hagen Harris (106), Jesse Jones (145) and Tayt Leavitt (220) all won a title for the Panthers.

Eric Pickens (152), Zeke Vinson (170) and Nathanial Dolezal (182) won titles for the Bobcats.

Lincoln County had two champions — Jordan Free (126) and Austin Marshall (132) — and finished second with 124 points. White Pine was third with 113 points, and Pahranagat Valley took fourth with 99½ points.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next week’s state tournament.
