Corvette crashes near downtown Las Vegas, driver dies

A crash Saturday morning in the downtown area left one dead, according to Las Vegas police.

Just before 10 a.m., a Corvette and motorcycle were racing near East Washington Avenue and North Bruce Street, Metro officer Kendall Bell said.

The 75-year-old male driver of the 1989 Chevy Corvette was traveling west on Washington Avenue west of Bruce Street at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control and began sliding sideways. The Corvette struck the north curb, drove up on the sidewalk, struck a palm tree, re-entered the roadway and came to rest, police said.

The man was taken to University Medical Center where he later died, Bell said.

Traffic along East Washington Avenue has been closed, he said.

The case is under investigation.
