Two killed after SUV falls from North Las Vegas overpass

Two people died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash after the SUV they were riding in fell off an overpass, North Las Vegas Police said.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., police received calls regarding a crash on Carey Avenue near an overpass above Interstate 15, North Las Vegas Police Officer Aaron Patty said. The crash, near Carey and Losee Road, involved a 1995 GMC SUV, according to a later release from the police department.

The driver, a 52-year-old man, and a 60-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

A preliminary investigation indicates the driver was traveling east on Carey and passed Losee Road at a high rate of speed, police said. Witnesses reported the driver appeared to have lost control of the SUV when it left the roadway and fell about 27 feet off the overpass, police said.

An investigation into whether alcohol was a contributing factor is ongoing, the release said.

The identities of those killed, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County coroner's office.
