Former Bullhead City cop convicted in sexual assault

A former Bullhead City, Arizona, police sergeant on Thursday was convicted of raping a young woman after they shared drinks together at a Laughlin bar in October 2014.

Jesse Hoag, 38, faces mandatory prison time when sentenced March 4 by Mohave County Superior Court Commissioner Billy Sipe.

Attorneys agreed during the trial that the 21-year-old woman initially consented to sexual activity with Hoag, but they differed on whether she was raped after telling him to stop. The jury deliberated about five hours over two days before finding Hoag guilty of two counts of sexual assault.

Robert Draskovich, the Las Vegas attorney who defended Hoag, said his client and family are "deeply disappointed" with the verdicts. The victim aspired to become a police officer and had taken criminal justice classes that Hoag once taught at Mohave Community College.

Hoag was also charged with the alleged sexual assault of another young woman in Laughlin just three weeks apart from the case that was tried in Arizona. Clark County officials, however, dismissed their case against Hoag.

Hoag faces 5 1/4 to 14 years in prison at sentencing.
