Better time and place for NFL protests

The misplaced NFL protests of the national anthem and our flag show a complete lack of understanding of the purpose of this tradition. It is about the existence of our nation due to the willingness of Americans, past and present, to sacrifice so that this nation could exist. Listen to the words of our anthem and you’ll understand.

Individual or group protests should not disrespect our veterans and armed forces, who today are in harm’s way and are risking their lives for our country. Dishonoring of the anthem and flag, both of which demonstrate our unity as a nation, serves no real purpose, other than to minimize the sacrifice of those who serve and have served and to further divide our country.

Surely there is a better time and place to offer protests, such as a moment of silence before or after the anthem, players gathering with protesters after the games or while tailgating. I’m in favor of the linking of arms because it serves as a message of unity. Lest we forget, freedom is never free.
