Temps during excessive-heat warning may break Las Vegas records

The Las Vegas Valley will creep up on record highs Sunday with an excessive-heat warning throughout the week, the National Weather Service said.

“We’re within a degree or two of records,” meteorologist John Adair said.

Sunday will reach highs near 109 degrees, which is the record for the day. Meteorologist Chris Outler said it’s “probably our best shot” at breaking a record this week.

The excessive-heat warning will go into effect at 10 a.m. Sunday and end at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The warning was initially set to end Monday, but was later extended until Wednesday.

“It’s looking very hot all the way into next week,” Adair said.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to hit 108 degrees, followed by a 107-degree high Thursday.

Saturday’s high topped out at 108 degrees, one below the record for the day.

The record temperature of 109 degrees for Aug. 27 was set in 2001. The 110-degree record high for Aug. 28 was set in 1944. The normal temperature for this time of year is 100 degrees, the weather service said.
