Sy Nielson, chairman of the Sun City Aliante Veterans Club, has been appointed to the North Las Vegas Veterans Community Commission by Gov. Brian Sandoval and North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee.

Louis Augenblick of North Las Vegas was recently elected as the Nevada State Commander of the Jewish War Veterans. Augenblick moved to Sun City Aliante in 2006 and is a member of the SCAL Veterans Club and the Jewish War Veterans Post 501.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jennifer C. Poole graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Poole is the daughter of Ann Poole of Chicago and Milton Poole of Las Vegas.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Alan F. Mendez graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Mendez is the son of Cenaida and Fernando Mendez of Coral Springs, Fla. He is a 2013 graduate of Palo Verde High School.

Air Force Airman Andrew J. Galeener graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Galeener is the son of Lyle and Michelle Galeener of Henderson and is a 2012 graduate of Foothill High School.

Air Force Airman Joshua W. Lovelady graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Lovelady is the son of Jennifer and Scott Lovelady of Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Centennial High School.

Air Force Airman Jacob A. Pinkney graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Pinkney is the son of Joseph Pinkney of Seaford, Va. He is a 2013 graduate of Legacy High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jabril M. Brooks graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Brooks is the son of Donavan and stepson of Melissa McIntosh of Las Vegas. He is a 2006 graduate of Centennial High School.

Joaquin Crame of Las Vegas graduated from the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa. The achievement earned him the honorary title of colonel.

Sarah Thomas of Green Valley High School, Brianna Becker of Faith Lutheran High School and Courtney Hagen of Nevada State High School were named women’s collegiate All-American Golf scholars.

On May 18, eNVy Beauty Awards Hair Competition and Fashion Show at Stoney’s in Town Square Las Vegas honored local hairstylists and businesses during the People’s Choice Award show in two categories, Avant Garde and Themed Pin Up. Proceeds supported the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. Top honors went to: JM Hair Gallery, Avant Garde, first place; Josephine Skaught, Pin Up, first place; Serenity Salon & Spa, Avant Garde, runner-up; and D’Hair To Be Different, Pin Up, runner-up.

Max Goldman of Las Vegas made the spring 2014 Dean’s List at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif.

Coleman Keith of Henderson made the fall 2013 Dean’s List at at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham Campus in Madison, N.J.

Valeria Altamirano of Henderson made the spring 2014 Dean’s List at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J.

Jake Higgins and Hillary Hirschfeld of Las Vegas and Blair Bigelow and Jimmy Williams of Henderson recently graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Tony Eackles of Las Vegas made the spring 2014 Dean’s List at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore.

Angela Caracci of Las Vegas recently graduated from the State University of New York at Potsdam.

Some students from area high schools and college technical education programs won the nation’s highest awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June. Top student winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions. The following local students are Skill Point Certificate recipients: Team A, consisting of Dustin Griffie and Blake Wilson from Foothill High School, was awarded the high school gold medal in Web design; Dena Stewart of Las Vegas and a student at College of Southern Nevada, was awarded the college/postsecondary bronze medal in photography.

Chrissy McDowell of Las Vegas made the spring 2014 Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University in Oxford, Ga.

Meghan DeGuire of North Las Vegas made the spring 2014 Dean’s List at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y.

Ariella Sela of Las Vegas graduated from Emory University in Atlanta on May 12.

Leo Lowenthal of Las Vegas and Casey Steward of Henderson recently were named as 2014 Study Abroad Grant recipients by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The grants, worth $1,000, were awarded to 50 students nationwide.

Alexander Erling and Samantha Higgins of Las Vegas made the spring 2014 honor roll at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Trisha Brandonisio of Henderson recently graduated from the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind.

Matthew Vincent Manno of Las Vegas and a senior at Advanced Technologies Academy, was one of 98 high school student representatives throughout the U.S. chosen to attend The American Legion Boys Nation in July at Marymount University, Arlington, Va., with daily trips to Washington, D.C.
