Fall watering restrictions begin Thursday in Las Vegas

The only obvious signs of autumn are the Halloween displays already going up at local grocery stores, but fall has officially arrived as far as the Southern Nevada Water Authority is concerned.

Thursday marks the start of fall watering restrictions in the Las Vegas Valley. Sprinkler and drip irrigation use is restricted to three assigned days per week at residences and businesses through Oct. 31. That’s when the winter schedule kicks in, limiting landscape watering to one assigned day a week.

To help save water this fall, the agency suggests running sprinklers in three 4-minute cycles about an hour apart. The cycle-and-soak method allows soil to absorb water slowly and reduces the risk of runoff that can result in a water-waste violation.

Watering after sunset and before sunrise will reduce evaporation and help avoid moisture-stealing winds in the late afternoon.

If you notice dry spots in your landscape, hand-watering is allowed any time.

Customers can visit snwa.com to look up their assigned watering days and get information on seasonal watering restrictions. Free landscape-watering schedules and information on watering groups is also available by calling the authority’s conservation help line at 258-SAVE.
