Hiker who died after fall at Red Rock Canyon identified

The Clark County coroner’s office has identified the man who fell 160 feet from a trail at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on Thursday night.

Justin William Manering, 31, of Las Vegas had been hiking with a group of co-workers before the fall about 6:15 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Timothy Hatchett said.

Manering grew up “very adventurous,” his mother, Pamela Kight, said. She said Manering was born and raised in Palm Bay, Florida, where she resides.

Manering and his girlfriend moved from Florida to Ohio and then to Nevada five years ago, she said. In 2014 they took a three-week trip from Las Vegas to Colorado, Mount Rushmore and Ohio, staying in national parks.

“He was a very outdoorsy person who loved the water, loved hiking and loved to fish,” his mother said.

Manering and his girlfriend moved to Las Vegas for the hiking opportunities, Kight said, and the two often went hiking at Red Rock Canyon. He would go hiking every chance he got, she said.

Manering was a waiter at Brio Tuscan Grille in Tivoli Village. The restaurant’s general manager, who chose not to release her name, said the staff is close and tight-knit.

“He was the highlight of someone’s day,” Kight said.

Aside from enjoying the outdoors during his free time, Manering loved to play Texas hold ’em, his mother said. He would often play competitively in local tournaments.

Metro’s search and rescue unit responded to the scene near Icebox Canyon. Manering sustained significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear what caused him to fall.

He is survived by his relatives in Florida and Ohio.
