Man, 33, dies after jumping off moving boat at Lake Mead

A 33-year-old man died at Lake Mead on Tuesday after he jumped off a moving boat.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the man as Jose Santos Galeana Barrera, 33-year-old North Las Vegas resident. His cause and manner of death have not been released.

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area Interagency Communication Center received a call about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday reporting that a vessel was coming to Callville Bay Marina with a deceased person on board and CPR was in progress, the National Park Service said.

Santos jumped from the boat without a life jacket while it was in motion at full plane, meaning the boat sped up to where most of the vessel was out of the water, Lake Mead public affairs officer Christie Vanover said.

When the boat’s operator returned to retrieve the man, he was found facedown in the water.

National Park Service medics and rangers responded and pronounced the man dead at 7:21 p.m. when resuscitation attempts failed, the agency reported.
