Man pleads guilty to rape and murder of Arbor View freshman

A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the rape and murder of a 15-year-old Arbor View High School freshman more than four years ago.

Alyssa Otremba was attacked less than 100 yards from her home on Satin Carnation Lane where she lived with her parents and two younger sisters.

Javier Righetti stalked the girl for more than half a mile before forcing her into a nearby wash, according to court documents.

He pleaded guilty last week to 10 counts, including murder with use of a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping and sexual assault with a child. Righetti faces the death penalty at a hearing next month.

Deputy Public Defender Christy Craig told District Judge Michelle Leavitt that Righetti "did not want to put (Otremba's) family members through the trial and will take full responsibility," according to court records.

Righetti confessed to Las Vegas police that after raping Alyssa in September 2011, he tortured her by stabbing her in the face and other body parts with a knife more than 80 times, according to authorities. He carved the initials "LV" on the freshman's body because he felt it was "gangster" and returned later to burn the body, authorities said.

The slaying occurred on the Friday that ended Alyssa's first week at Arbor View High School. She had stayed home from school that day after not feeling well in the morning. But she wanted to pick up a textbook from a classmate so she could do her homework for the weekend.
