Memorial Day events abound throughout valley

Beginning today, when Veterans Village holds a ribbon-cutting for its thrift store, through Tuesday, when Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., holds a roundtable to discuss veterans issues, the list of Memorial Day weekend events overflows.

At 10:30 a.m. today at 6029 W. Charleston Blvd., Veterans Village Las Vegas will hold the grand opening of its 33,000-square-foot thrift store featuring refurbished donations from Las Vegas corporations and retailers. All U.S. veterans receive a 10 percent discount on purchases with net proceeds going to support Veterans Village operations. Veterans Village is a temporary housing and resource facility for veterans and their families. It is owned and operated by SHARE, a nonprofit organization.

Titus, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Veterans Village founder Arnold Stalk are slated to attend.

On Saturday at 7 a.m., Boy Scouts will team up with Special Forces Association Chapter 51 to place flags on graves at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.

On Sunday, Green Beret veterans from Chapter 51 will hold an annual remembrance ceremony for fallen and deceased comrades at 10 a.m. They are expected to be joined by dozens of veterans on motorcycles.

At 9 a.m. Monday, Palm Downtown Mortuary and American Legion Post No. 8 will hold a 48th annual Memorial Day service at 1235 N. Main St., featuring a host of patriotic performers and dignitaries.

Palm Northwest Mortuary and Cemetery, at 6701 N. Jones Blvd., will host its own ceremony at 2 p.m. for VFW Post 12093.

The Lakes Memorial Day Ceremony will kick off at 10 a.m. Monday at South Lake Drive between Shoreline Drive and Lido Isle Court.

Then, at 1 p.m. at the veterans cemetery in Boulder City, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, members of Nevada’s congressional delegation are expected to speak about the meaning of Memorial Day at the cemetery chapel.

The roundtable discussion for invited veterans organization representatives with Titus, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the West Charleston campus of the College of Southern Nevada.
