Two-hour police standoff ends peacefully

A two-hour barricade situation about a block east of the Las Vegas Strip ended peacefully Tuesday night when police said an armed man surrendered from his apartment.

Metro officers initially responded to a welfare check shortly after

5 p.m. at an apartment complex in between the Mandalay Bay and McCarran International Airport. The man inside the 5300 block of Bethel Lane apartment was reportedly suicidal, said department spokesman Jesse Roybal.

When officers showed up, Roybal said the man confronted them with a gun inside his apartment, so "officers backed out."

In the hours that followed, a fire truck, medics and many patrol cars gathered at the scene for back-up while the man remained inside. As SWAT was en route, the man came out voluntarily.

Police said he was transported to a hospital for treatment.
