Woman critical after Maryland Parkway apartment fire

An elderly woman is in critical condition after a central valley fire left her unconscious with severe burns Tuesday.

The Las Vegas Fire Department responded at 1:59 p.m. to the blaze in an apartment in the 300 block of South Maryland Parkway near Bridger Avenue, according to a news release. Firefighters found flames coming from a window in an upstairs window.

Upon entering the apartment, responders found the woman lying unconscious on the floor. She was taken to University Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening.

The fire started on a mattress in the unit’s living room and caused an estimated $70,000 damage, according to a release from the department. The woman was a smoker, the department said, and the home did not have any smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No other details were immediately available.
