Former Las Vegas 51s pitcher Jenrry Mejia banned under MLB drug policy
New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia, who prepared for last season with the Las Vegas 51s, became the first player to receive a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball via the drug agreement after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance for the third time.
Mejia, 26, was suspended for 80 games last April following a positive test for Stanozolol. He returned July 12 and pitched in seven games for the Mets. On July 28, he was banned for 162 games after testing positive for Stanozolol and Boldenone.
On Friday, the commissioner's office announced he had tested positive for Boldenone, triggering the third strike under the banned substance policy with the players union in 2005.
Mejia was Mets closer in 2014, saving 28 of 31 games. He prepped for his 2015 return by pitching four innings over four games, saving one.
