Highlighting achievements, March 24, 2016 — PHOTOS

MathCounts Competition: Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) school, recently placed at the MathCounts Competition Series at the regional level. As a result of their scores, all 10 members of the team competed at the state level March 12.

Live Your Dream Art Contest: As part of the eighth annual Soroptimist Live Your Dream Art Contest, Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas asked the fifth-graders at Mater Academy of Nevada to create a work of art that depicts a woman who serves as a mentor or role model in their life. More than 65 students submitted artwork. All students were given certificates of participation at an award ceremony hosted by SIGLV and the first-, second- and third-place winners were each given a gift card and a book. SIGLV also donated books for elementary readers to the school’s library.

Spelling bee championship: Seventh-grader Alyssa Mangio of St. Anne’s Catholic School won the Nevada State Spelling Bee championship March 5 with the correct spelling of the word “orison.” She competed against 29 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from across Nevada, vying for one spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held May 24-26 in Washington, D.C.

Graduations:

— U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Jordan U. Perkins graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Perkins is the son of Jeremy Perkins of Las Vegas and Carmen Livreri of Caliente and step-son of Tricia Perkins of Las Vegas and Joe Livreri of Caliente. He is also the grandson of Peter and Enid Abramowski of Las Vegas. The airman graduated in 2014 from Western High School.

— U.S. Air Force Airman Isabelle T. Long graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Long is the daughter of William D. and Laura R. Anderson of North Las Vegas and is a 2015 graduate of Legacy High School.

— Brad Hill of Las Vegas made the fall 2015 dean’s list at Champlain College in Burlington, Va.

— Johnathan Khumnark of Las Vegas made the fall 2015 dean’s list at University of Dayton in Ohio.

— Kristi Macaluso of Henderson made the fall 2015 dean’s list at Widener University in Chester, Penn.

— Cori Sutton of Henderson made the fall 2015 dean’s list at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo.

— Emma Doney of Las Vegas made the fall 2015 dean’s list at University of Delaware.

— John T. Flint of North Las Vegas made the fall 2015 dean’s list at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vo. He is the son of Lee and Shelly Flint of North Las Vegas.

— Taylor Paulson of Henderson made the fall 2015 President’s Honor Roll at Oklahoma City University.
