Air advisory in effect through weekend in Las Vegas Valley

A haze caused by California wildfires settled over the Las Vegas Valley on Friday, causing an air quality advisory to be issued through Monday.

The Clark County Department of Air Quality issued the advisory for ozone and smoke on Friday, as temperatures dipped slightly but still remained in the triple digits.

The valley will see slightly cooler temperatures over the weekend, though temperatures will be still be higher than average, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday saw a high of 109 degrees, and Saturday will slide down to 107 before highs rise to 110 again on Sunday and Monday, meteorologist John Adair said.

The weather service is forecasting light winds of 5 to 10 mph throughout the weekend. Incoming monsoon moisture is expected in the Spring Mountains on Tuesday and there is a 20 percent chance for thunderstorms in the valley on Thursday, Adair said.

The air advisory recommends that people with lung conditions, children and older adults stay indoors while the advisory is in effect.

According to the EPA’s AirNow monitoring system, the worst of the smoke pollution will be centered in Henderson and the central valley.

Jose Chaverria of the county air quality department said the smoke also would affect residents in the northwest valley.

Chaverria advises residents keep their home and car windows closed and run air conditioning because the filters remove dust and smoke particles from the air.
