Scientists propose one-way trips to Mars

PULLMAN, Wash. — Invoking the spirit of “Star Trek” in a scholarly article entitled “To Boldly Go,” two scientists contend human travel to Mars could happen much more quickly and cheaply if the missions are made one-way. They argue that it would be little different from early settlers to North America, who left Europe with little expectation of return. Mars is a six-month flight away, possesses surface gravity, an atmosphere, abundant water, carbon dioxide and essential minerals.

‘Megamind’ continues box office reign with $30 million

LOS ANGELES — Will Ferrell’s dastardly schemes continue to succeed, with the animated “Megamind” staying at the top of the box office. The DreamWorks Animation 3-D comedy, featuring Ferrell as the voice of a super villain, made just over $30 million in its second week in theaters, according to Sunday studio estimates. It’s now made nearly $90 million total.
