1939 Batman comic sells for nearly $500k in Dallas

DALLAS — A rare comic book an 84-year-old California man bought for a dime when he was a teen has been sold in Texas for $492,937. The copy of Detective Comics No. 27 featured the debut of “The Batman.” Robert Irwin says he bought the May 1939 issue from a Sacramento, Calif., newsstand when he was 13, and it’s the only comic book he kept from his youth.

Explosion shakes New Zealand coal mine; 27 missing

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A gas explosion ripped through one of New Zealand’s largest coal mines Friday while dozens of workers were underground. Five of them, dazed and slightly injured, stumbled to the surface hours later, and 27 were missing, officials said. Police said that shortly before the blast the electricity went out in the mine, which may have caused ventilation problems. That may have contributed to a buildup of gas underground.
