A word becomes a phrase, which evolves into a line. Suddenly an entire verse flows through his brain and out of his mouth. The words keep coming, matching the rhythm set by a pounding bass. The steadiness of the beat combines with his voice, which continues to deliver a stream of fiery words put together in clever metaphors and captivating arrangements.

The characters in Alissa Nutting’s debut short story collection, “Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls,” hold some interesting jobs, even if Nutting’s definition of “job” is more inclusive — and, maybe weirder — than most people’s definition of the word.

Hollywood’s triple loss is Las Vegas’ triple gain after three showbiz vets — actor Clarence Gilyard, screenwriter/producer Sean Clark and actor Michael Tylo — left the glitter and glamour to teach in the film and theater departments at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Let me be frank with you: Don’t let me be Frank with you. One of the last places I belong is performing in Frank Sinatra’s shiny shoes on a Vegas stage. So here I am, of course, starring in “The Rat Pack is Back” at the Plaza downtown.
