Libraries strive to keep kids reading all summer

The dreaded “summer slide” refers to the learning loss that occurs during the few months kids are out of school. The Las Vegas-Clark County and North Las Vegas library districts and Henderson District Public Libraries are looking to combat that slide and keep kids engaged in learning by offering incentive-based summer reading programs for young children, teens and adults.

Disability advocate to present free motivational program

Reggie Bennett, a paraplegic, speaker and well-known Las Vegas advocate for the disability community through his organization RAGE, Rebuilding All Goals Efficiently, plans to bring his motivational message to the Adelson Educational Campus Theater for a free event Saturday.

Daughter’s display exhibits struggles with eating disorder

As part of National Teen Self-Esteem Month in May, the Windmill Library, 7060 W. Windmill Lane, is presenting “Eyes of the Soul,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Heidi Haugen, a Southern California woman who died in 2001 from complications stemming from an eating disorder. The exhibit runs through Sunday.

Yarn creations adorn nearly every corner of the West Flamingo Senior Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road. The railing at the front entrance is covered in yarn. The bulletin board is framed in yarn. The handles on the backs of the chairs are wrapped in yarn.

In its first year, the Las Vegas Day School enrolled 27 students. Today, the state’s oldest private school, at 3275 Red Rock St., is wrapping up its 50th academic year with an enrollment of 920.
