A Las Vegas man who was shot to death during a confrontation following a car crash on the 215 Beltway Monday has been identified.
According to the Clark County coroner’s office, Kevin Lozano, 32, died of multiple gunshot wounds after police said he slashed another man’s car with a knife Monday evening on the 215 Beltway between Jones and Rainbow boulevards.
The cause of death for Lozano was listed as homicide, according to the coroner’s office. The Metropolitan Police Department has indicated it is viewing the shooting as a possible act of self-defense.
Metro responded at 6:30 p.m. on Monday to reports of a shooting after a suspect rear-ended a car in what police called a “minor traffic incident.”
Metro Homicide Lt. Robert Price said a vehicle rear-ended another vehicle driven by a man — later identified as Lozano — before the two vehicles stopped. The person in the first vehicle then got out to check on the driver of the rear-ended vehicle.
At that point, police said, Lozano “jumped out” with a knife and started to chase the other driver, at which point the other driver went back inside his vehicle to retrieve a gun.
Lozano then repeatedly stabbed the car and at least one of its tires, according to police, before the other driver told Lozano to get away. Lozano then “lunged forward” at the other driver, which led to shots being fired, police said.
Lozano was pronounced dead at the scene.
The person who shot Lozano was detained by officers at the scene where he spoke to detectives, Price said. Metro has not released his name.
He was later released, and Metro said its homicide team will present its investigation to the Clark County district attorney’s office for a self-defense review.
According to online court records, Lozano pleaded guilty to a charge of DUI, his third in Nevada, in 2015. He was also found guilty of domestic battery in 2022, court records showed.
