Terry Fator’s list of rescued dogs grows to 7

Terry Fator’s house full of rescued dogs has grown to seven.

The Mirage headliner said he considers this one “a miracle.” Lucky No. 7.

Fator and his wife and stage assistant, Taylor Makakoa, were walking their dogs near Sunset Park on Friday.

They had not walked that route in six months. “Taylor had said, ‘Let’s go this way,’ at the last second,” Fator said.

One of the dogs started sniffing something in the bushes.

When Fator walked over to investigate he saw something “matted with blood” among the brambles.

For a second, Fator thought it was a dead porcupine or a chipmunk, he said.

Then it moved. It was a Yorkshire terrier puppy, clinging to life, he said.

When Fator retrieved it from the thorns, the pup had a stick stuck in its abdomen.

“It was barely breathing. It looked like it had given up,” Fator said.

They rushed to a nearby veterinarian, who found numerous bite wounds “possibly from a coyote,” Fator said.

Makakoa’s mother, Nani Koki, took the recovering dog home from the veterinarian on Sunday while the Fators were in Chicago for Terry’s speaking appearance.

They’ve named the pup Makana, Hawaiian for gift of God, Fator said.

After posting before-and-after photos and updates of Makana on Facebook.com/TerryFator, they were amazed by the “gigantic response.

“It shattered our previous numbers. We had 11,000 likes, 6,000-7,000 comments and several hundred thousand views,” he said.

Makana’s recovery has been remarkable.

She didn’t eat through the weekend but finally accepted some chicken from Koki on Monday.

Unable to walk when discovered on Friday, now she’s “the leader of the pack,” Fator said.

“When we walk the dogs it looks like a dog-walking service,” he said.

Makana and the Fators will appear on my “Morning Blend” entertainment segment with co-hosts Dao Vu and Shawn Tempesta about 9:45 a.m. on Thursday.

QUAKE TAKES

Mark Cole, a retired U.S. State Department employee who now lives in Las Vegas, was in Hong Kong when the 1989 World Series was interrupted by a powerful earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area.

He still has a copy of that day’s sports page from the South China Morning Post, the largest English-language newspaper in Hong Kong.

What made it worth keeping was the lead paragraph on the World Series, with the Oakland A’s leading two games to none against San Francisco.

The story began: “Only an earthquake can save San Francisco now. Nothing else has stopped the Oakland Athletics.”

Cole, in an email, said, “Keep in mind that Hong Kong is 15 hours ahead of San Francisco time.”

Somewhere in my boxes of memorabilia I have a newspaper that a fan gave me 30 minutes after the earthquake, outside Candlestick Park.

After spotting my World Series credential, the fan said, “Here. Check out the headline.”

The gist of the banner was something close to this: Only Way the A’s Lose is if the Bay Bridge Collapses.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

George Clooney and business partner Rande Gerber made sure their tequila was well- represented at Clooney’s Sept. 27 wedding in Venice. They had 100 cases of Casamigos tequila shipped to Venice for the three-day party. A Casamigos rep confirmed to me that Clooney held back one case for his two-week honeymoon/staycation with his wife, Amal, in their English mansion outside London.

Gerber, who operated nightclubs at Green Valley Ranch (Whiskey) and Red Rock Resort (Cherry), was Clooney’s best man. ...
