34-year-old man dead after Saturday night scooter crash

A 34-year-old man died Saturday night after the scooter he was driving ran into the side of a car in the west valley, according to Las Vegas police.

Officers were called just before 6:15 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Windermere Drive, west of Rampart Boulevard.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicate the 34-year-old Las Vegas man was traveling east in the right travel lane of Charleston on a 2011 JMSTar scooter, approaching Windermere, when the driver of a 2002 Honda Civic westbound on Charleston turned left to enter the Camden del Mar apartments and crossed into the path of the scooter.

The man driving the scooter tried to swerve to avoid the Honda, but the scooter fell onto its side and struck the right side of the car, police wrote in a release Saturday night.

The scooter operator was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries and died shortly after arriving there, the release said.

The 60-year-old woman who was driving the Honda stayed at the scene and did not appear to be impaired, police said in the release. She and the two passengers in the Honda, a 54-year-old man and 59-year-old woman, were not injured in the wreck.

The man who died in the crash will be identified by the Clark County coroner's office after his family has been notified.

This is the 75th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
