Newsmakers, April 10-16

Siena Prenger of Las Vegas, an eighth-grader at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, was presented March 17 with an engraved silver medallion to recognize her selection by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards as one of Nevada’s top two youth volunteers of 2014.

Air Force Airman Thredz I. Chan graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Chan is the son of Tezs and Third Chan of North Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Northwest Career and Technical Academy.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Logan A. Lasko graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Lasko is the son of Barry Lasko of Henderson and is a 2008 graduate of Foothill High School.

Air Force Airman Cole B. Siepman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Siepman is the son of Jana Galiza of North Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Legacy High School.

Air Force Airman Anthony Avila graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Avila is the son of Joaquina Alvarado and Adrian Avila of Las Vegas and is a 2012 graduate of Desert Pines High School.

Air Force Airman Roberto A. Ugalde-Velasco graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Ugalde-Velasco is the son of Maria Velasco and stepson of Anthony King, both of Las Vegas. He is a 2012 graduate of Durango High School.

Kayla Connick of Las Vegas earned 2013 fall Dean’s List honors at Maryville University in St. Louis.

Air Force Airman Devesh Karmokar graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Karmokar is the son of Sarah and Arabindu Karmokar of Henderson and is a 2013 graduate of Green Valley High School.

Army Pvt. Christian M. Barillas has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. Barillas is the son of Marina and stepson of David Morales of North Las Vegas. He is a 2012 graduate of Mojave High School.

Army Reserve Pfc. Quentin M. Contreras has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. Contreras is the son of Michael and Serap Contreras of North Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Mojave High School.

Air Force Airman Jordan D. Wolverton graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Wolverton is the son of Misty Wolverton of Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Del Sol High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Christian A. De Galicia graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. De Galicia is the son of Emily De Galicia of Henderson. He is a 2006 graduate of Foothill High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011 from UNLV.

Benjamin Marx of Las Vegas was named to the Dean’s List for the second consecutive semester at Arizona State University’s College of Technology and Innovation, where he is majoring in Technological Entrepreneurship and Management. Marx, a sophomore, is the son of Dr. James and Marcia Marx of Las Vegas and is a 2012 graduate of the Adelson Educational Campus.

Nicole McCoy, daughter of Kristine McCoy of Las Vegas, was named with high honors to the fall semester Dean’s List at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, Minn.

Air Force Airman Alexander Anguiano graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Anguiano is the son of Cathy Mena of Henderson and Jose Anguiano of Van Nuys, Calif. He is a 2013 graduate of Foothill High School.

The Army and Navy Academy awarded the General William W. Crouch Distinguished Leadership Award March 16 to Hans Steed of Henderson for his performance during the fall 2013 school semester.

The Army and Navy Academy awarded the Dean Raymond Ede Superior Academic Achievement Award March 16 to Daniel Larson of Las Vegas for his performance during the fall 2013 school semester.

The Yale Club of Nevada, the local alumni association of Yale University, held its first awards event honoring high school juniors from Clark County schools. Thirteen students from five high schools were awarded the Outstanding Scholar Award, and three students received the Yale Book Award. They are: Cameron Both, Alex LuWang, Sabrina Wang, Jeri Mallory, Samantha Burton, Abishta Prabhu, Danica Topham, Eyasu Kebede, Lydia Haile, Evelyn Flores, Allison Armstrong, Xiao Hua Feng and Patrick Gomez.

Air Force Airman Matt J. Olbes graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Olbes is the son of Janet Olbes and Joeseph Onolan of Las Vegas. He is a 2012 graduate of Valley High School.

Army Reserve Pvt. Dominique E. Garcia has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Garcia is the son of Marlise Garcia of Las Vegas and is a 2013 graduate of Cimarron-Memorial High School.

Army Pfc. Jeffrey C. Flores has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Flores is the son of Domingo and Thelma Flores and brother of Christine Flores, all of Las Vegas. He is a 2013 graduate of Liberty High School.

Justine Espersen of Las Vegas was named to the dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., during the fall 2013 semester.

Army Reserve Pfc. Daniel J. Turner has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Turner is the former ward of Arlicia and Kevin Crawford of Las Vegas. He is a 2013 graduate of Palo Verde High School.

Berklee College of Music in Boston has announced that the following students have earned placement on the fall 2013 Dean’s List: Benjamin Cole, Jonathan Denman and Kyle Graski, all of Las Vegas.
