View takes nine top awards in Nevada Press Association contest

Henderson/Anthem View reporter Michael Lyle was named this year's Journalist of Merit at the Nevada Press Association's 2011 convention scheduled for Oct. 14-15 in Virginia City.

The coveted award, set aside for journalists with fewer than five years experience in the field, is designed to encourage journalists to stay in the newspaper industry.

Lyle also won first-place awards in Best Business News Story, for an article titled "End of the Song" and Best Investigative or In-Depth Story or Series for a domestic violence awareness series.

In addition to Lyle's achievements, View took six more first-place awards including awards for Best Editorial Page, Best Overall Design, Community Service for Summerlin reporter Jan Hogan's gang awareness series, Best Sports Feature for North Las Vegas and Centennial View reporter Maggie Lillis' story about a 75-year-old cyclist's efforts to stay on the road, Best Black & White Ad for an ad by Jennifer Dibble and Best Headline Writing for a series of headlines submitted by View deputy editor Ginger Meurer.

View second-place finishes included: Best Spot News Story for Kristi Jourdan's article titled "Paintbrush project limbo continues after artist's death" and Best Investigative or In-depth Story or Series for Jourdan's examination of the Las Vegas Youth Offender Court. Lillis took second in Best Business Feature for a story titled "Artisanal Foods owner started career as a truffle titan." Photographer Jessica Ebelhar took second in Best Feature Photo for a photo taken at Camp Cartwheel and in Best News Photo Coverage for photos to accompany Jourdan's Youth Court story. Mike Miller took second place for Best Editorial Cartoon for one of his Sir Oscar series submissions. Jason Bean took second in Best Multimedia Story for his video tied to the Youth Offender Court series.

Sunrise/Whitney reporter F. Andrew Taylor took second in Best Multiple Photo Essay for a series of photos of wildflowers in the foothills of Frenchman Mountain.

Taylor also took third-place in Best Illustration for an illustration for a story on Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School.

Additional third-place finishes included awards for General Excellence and Advertising General Excellence.

Copy editor Lisa Valentine took third in Best Page Design. Deborah Wall's Outdoors column took third in Best Local Non-staff Column.

Ebelhar's photos for the Youth Offender Court series took third in Best News Photo Coverage, and her photo from Nevada Ballet Theatre's Creative Dance Camp took third in Best Feature Photo.

View's newly redesigned website came in third, and Michael Quine took third in Best Multimedia Story for a video on a local family's experiences trapped on a cruise ship.

View took third-place advertising awards for Best Large-Space Ad (Danielle Cawkill), Best Black & White Ad (Teri Hogue) and Best Multi-Color Ad (Jennifer Dibble).
