Family members of men killed by Las Vegas police endorse Ted Moody in sheriff’s race
Family members of two men killed by Las Vegas police announced Thursday they will support a former assistant sheriff — who resigned after a controversial decision about use of force accountability — in the upcoming sheriff’s election.
Rondha Gibson and William Scott endorsed Ted Moody at a press event at The Leatherneck Club, a Marine Corps. bar at 4360 W. Spring Mountain Road, near Arville Street.
Gibson’s husband, 43-year-old Stanley Gibson, a veteran who was killed Dec. 12, 2011, during a standoff at the Alondra apartments, 2451 N. Rainbow Blvd., near Smoke Ranch Road, which began with a mistaken attempted burglary report. His family said he suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome from his military service.
“I believe in what he has to say,” Gibson said. “I believe he can make a change for us.”
Gibson expressed her belief that the next sheriff should hold officers accountable if they “use deadly force unnecessarily.”
“The next sheriff of Clark County needs to be committed to de-escalating violent situations. Particularly those involving someone suffering with mental illness,” Gibson said.
William Scott’s son, Erik, was shot and killed by Metro officers on July 10, 2010 outside a Summerlin Costco. An employee at the store called police and reported that the 38-year-old was acting erratically and wouldn’t leave the store when told his gun was not allowed.
“I firmly believe Ted Moody is the only candidate committed to holding Metro officers accountable for their actions and instilling a ‘protect and serve’ culture,” said Scott’s statement, which was read by family spokeswoman Lisa Mayo DeRiso.
Moody, 52, retired on July 24, two days after Sheriff Doug Gillespie announced his decision not to accept the Use of Force Review Board’s decision to fire officer Jacquar Roston, who shot an unarmed man in the leg in November.
