Liberty shut out by Florida powerhouse

A week after a resounding victory against an out-of-state opponent, Liberty’s football team experienced the inverse.

The Patriots, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, had no answer for the American Heritage (Florida) defense and fell 31-0 on the road Friday.

American Heritage, ranked No. 25 in USA Today’s Super 25, got off to an early start when Vanderbilt-bound senior Miles Jones scored on a 2-yard run with 3 minutes, 5 seconds into the game.

Liberty (1-1) held American Heritage off for the rest of the first quarter, but surrendered 17 points in the second quarter. American Heritage (2-0) defensive end Andrew Chatfield returned a fumble 35 yards for a score with 1:05 left in the half to make it 24-0 heading into the locker room.

Tyler Jones led American Heritage with 142 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10 carries.
