At least 8 babies born in Las Vegas in first 5 hours of the new year
The first baby born in 2023 in Las Vegas might have been at little boy at MountainView Hospital.
Atticus Grayson Hernandez was born at 12:27 a.m. at 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 19.5 inches, according to Antonio Castelan, a spokesperson for HCA Healthcare.
Las Vegas resident Karla Vivaldo Bravo delivered the boy through a cesarean section.
Atticus was born minutes before a baby girl was delivered just feet away in another room at MountainView.
Brandi Taylor gave birth to a girl at 12:43 a.m. She had not named the child as of noon, Castelan said.
The baby girl was 6 pounds, 12 ounces and 18.5 inches long.
The infants beat out The Valley Health System’s first baby, Shiloh, who arrived at 12:51 a.m., according to Valley Health System spokesperson Gretchen Papez.
Shiloh was born at Henderson Hospital, and her parents declined to be named.
Valley Health System also includes Centennial Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Summerlin Hospital and Medical Center, Desert Springs Hospital and Medical Center, Spring Valley Hospital and Medical Center and Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
Spring Valley had its first baby at 2:02 a.m., Summerlin had its first baby at 2:35 a.m. and Centennial Hills recorded its first baby at 3:44 a.m.
The first baby born at Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center came just before 2 a.m., when Gianna Ferrer Caso entered the world at 7 pounds, 3 ounces, Castelan said.
University Medical Center did not have a birth this year until about 4:30 a.m., according to a hospital representative.
Decker turns 1
The nation’s first baby born in 2022, Decker Lewis of Centennial Hills, celebrated his first birthday Sunday with a smash cake and presents his 2-year-old sister, Navy, helped him open.
His mother, Katelin Lewis is a kindergarten teacher at Kenneth Divich Elementary School in Skye Canyon. She said Decker sleeps well at night now, because the rambunctious toddler is full of energy during the day.
“Decker is the smiliest little baby,” Lewis said. “He is just nonstop. That kid does not stop to do anything for more than three seconds. He’s happy and he’s laughing.”
Lewis was born and raised in Southern California, but moved to the valley with her husband Brandon Lewis in 2018 after he finished his time in the Navy and became a carpenter.
Decker was due January 6, 2022, but when Katelin Lewis went into labor on December 31, 2021, the hospital told her they might send her home until the next day because she was not far enough along to deliver. Her obstetrician insisted they would get Decker out in 2021.
Decker was officially born 30 seconds into the new year at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, and Lewis later learned that made him the first baby born across the country.
“I got a really sweet gift bag of diapers, gift cards and wipes from the hospitals,” Lewis said. “He’s my little best friend and I love him.”
