Bicyclist critical after hit-and-run in central Las Vegas

A bicyclist was critically injured after he was struck by a car Thursday morning, Las Vegas police said.

At 7:46 a.m., police received a report of a man on a bicycle struck by a vehicle in the 4300 block of South Arville Street, near the intersection with Rochelle Avenue, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

According to Metro, Jerry Stanton, 52-year-old Las Vegas resident, was riding a bicycle in the right northbound lane of Arville when he was struck from behind by a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu travelling at a high rate of speed.

”The bicyclist was forced into the windshield of the Chevrolet Malibu and fell to the ground coming to rest in the right travel lane of Arville Street next to the damaged bicycle,” Metro said in a news release.

Police said the driver of the Malibu, 30-year-old Joshua Prinz of Las Vegas, left the scene at a high rate of speed, but was followed by a witness to 4325 West Twain Ave., and stayed with him until police arrived.

According to police, Prinz failed field sobriety tests and was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for driving under the influence with substantial bodily harm and hit and run with injury, both felonies.

Stanton was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Metro said.

Metro’s collision investigation section is investigating the scene, and Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said Metro’s fatal section was also involved. Northbound and southbound lanes on Arville are closed between Harmon and Rochelle avenues, police said.

As of Friday morning, Stanton remains in critical condition at UMC.
