Jonathan Ruchel has graduated from basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, where he was a squad leader and earned an expert shooting medal.
Ruchel is a 2012 graduate of Desert Pines High School, where he was a first lieutenant with the Marine Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
He is now stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Ruchel is the son of Raymond and Francine Ruchel of Las Vegas.
Jonisha Nolan, 13, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Nevada Pageant to be held July 13-14 at the JW Marriott.
Jonisha, a student at Johnston Middle School, is a two-time recipient of the Presidential Academic Excellence and Effort Award.
She enjoys acting, dancing, reading, modeling, cooking and cycling and hopes to become a lawyer.
She is the daughter of Ruthie Jones of Las Vegas.
Sarah DeLeon, 18, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Nevada Pageant to be held July 13-14 at the JW Marriott.
She enjoys modeling, hip-hop dancing, choir, community service, figure skating, cooking, baking and bowling.
A senior at Southeast Career and Technical Academy, she is the daughter of Jojo and Beth DeLeon of Las Vegas.
Clarke Knight, a chemistry major at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., has been selected to receive the 2013 Gladys Anderson Emerson Scholarship.
Knight has followed her interest in environmental issues around the world.
In 2012, she traveled to Tasmania, Australia, to work on applications of insecticide to a variety of potato. Her research helped to compare a new, proprietary compound to more traditional treatments.
She is active in athletics and community service and works for the college’s chemistry department as a teaching assistant.
Knight is a 2010 graduate of Green Valley High School.
Matthew Hambacher, 13, won first place in the Nevada MathCounts competition.
He will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national competition.
Matthew is an eighth-grader at Hyde Park Middle School.
He is the son of Eric and Kyong Hambacher of Las Vegas and grandson of Arthur and Joyce Hambacher of North Las Vegas.
Christopher Hambacher, 12, won fifth place in the Nevada MathCounts competition.
He will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national competition.
Christopher is a seventh-grader at Hyde Park Middle School.
He is the son of Eric and Kyong Hambacher of Las Vegas and grandson of Arthur and Joyce Hambacher of North Las Vegas.
