Challenges of 2009 offer valuable lessons

It has been a year of learning. With economic challenges at every turn throughout 2009, many have been forced to do more with less. People have downsized, minimized, economized and localized. In a sense it could be considered a sort of natural correction. As we move forward into the new year we should not forget these important lessons.

Old dreidels are a rare find

Christmas is celebrated on Dec. 25 each year, but the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah falls on dates determined by the lunar, not the solar, calendar — so the dates are different every year.

At the farmers market today some of us from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program will be presenting a short workshop on starting vegetables from seeds that germinate in cold weather and container growing. “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care …” Christmas is eight days away, and Hanukkah began at sundown on Dec 11. The joy we feel going into the holiday season can quickly turn to stress as we try to fit celebrations, gift buying and decorating into our already busy schedules.

FISHING REPORT

LAKE MEAD — With the passing storms, the lake saw little action last weekend. Anglers reported slow fishing off the docks at Hemenway and Boulder Harbor. Two tournaments took place last weekend for stripers and black bass. Shad are beginning to move to deeper water, making the bass difficult to find.

Airlines not united in allowing antlers

If you’re planning a hunting trip that will take you out of the country next year, or even out of state, then one of the details you need to decide on is whether you will be flying. If you decide to fly, be sure to check the fine print before you buy your plane ticket. Failure to do so could make your return trip somewhat less than pleasant, especially if you plan on checking a set of antlers or horns on the way home.
