London exhibit examines centuries of drug history

LONDON — So you think drug culture began at Woodstock in the 1960s? Think again. A massive bong statue spanning the length of a room, the laudanum-induced ‘Kubla Khan’ manuscript and psychedelic videos await those curious enough to learn about 3,500 years’ worth of human drug use. “High Society,” an exhibition opening Thursday at London’s Wellcome Collection museum, examines the controversial history of opium, from pre-biblical practices to today’s entire illegal drug market.

Wartime memories still vivid for B-29 pilot

Leonard Carpi, 86, will put on his 9th Bomb Group cap today, the one he always wears on Veterans Day, showing a B-29 Superfortress above the bill with the words, “Tinian Island 1945.” And he will think about crew mates who counted on him to bring them home safely on April 5, 1945.

Cruise ship fire ruins Henderson couple’s vacation

Vicky and Fernando Alvarez of Henderson looked forward to celebrating their anniversary on a cruise aboard the Carnival Splendor. But an engine room fire ended the fun Monday, leaving 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crew members adrift in the Pacific Ocean. Vicky Alvarez finally reached her family by phone this morning.

IRS requiring tax preparers to register before filing returns

The Internal Revenue Service is asking an estimated 10,000 income tax preparers in Nevada, as well as their peers around the country, to register prior to submitting any returns next year. The IRS said the registration requirement is the start of a program to upgrade the competence of tax preparers who compile data for 60 percent of all tax returns.

Margarito tries to focus on future, not failures

Already trying to live down a hand-wrap scandal, Antonio Margarito has suffered another figurative black eye days before his fight against Manny Pacquiao. An Internet video surfaced this week showing Margarito, sparring partner Brandon Rios and trainer Robert Garcia mocking Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach, who has Parkinson’s disease.
