Coroner IDs man killed by Las Vegas police officer at UMC

Updated September 27, 2017 - 10:54 am

The Clark County coroner’s office has identified the man a Las Vegas police officer shot and killed early Monday morning at University Medical Center.

Cody Leighland O’Bryan, 31, was killed when a Metropolitan Police Department officer shot him in the hospital’s emergency room. The coroner’s office said he died from a gunshot wound to the head.

On Wednesday, Metro identified the officer as Thomas Rybacki, 35. He has worked for the department since September 2014 but has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of a review of the incident.

O’Bryan told 911 dispatchers on Sunday night that he wanted to “blast it out” with police. Responding officers found him passed out on the ground near Charleston Boulevard and Palmhurst Drive. When they ran his name through a police database, they saw he had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest, police said.

He was too intoxicated to go through booking at the county jail, so he was taken to University Medical Center on West Charleston Boulevard.

A corrections officer from the jail met a police officer at the hospital room. When the two officers left the room, the corrections officer left behind a bag containing a Taser.

A nurse and security guard then entered the hospital room, and O’Bryan pointed the Taser at them. When the guard and nurse ran out of the room, the police officer entered.

O’Bryan turned his focus to the officer, who fired one round, killing the man. No officers or hospital staff were injured.

The death marked the 141st homicide in Clark County this year and the 17th officer-involved shooting investigated by Metro.
