Part of Main Street in downtown Las Vegas to become one-way

Main Street will permanently become a one-way northbound road through a one-mile stretch of downtown Las Vegas by the end of next week, city officials said.

The conversion is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. Sept. 5, when traffic will be directed to go one way on Main between Charleston Boulevard to Gass Avenue, city spokeswoman Margaret Kurtz said.

The one-way segment on Main will be lengthened between Charleston and Las Vegas boulevards by 11:30 p.m. Sept. 8.

The move aims to complement the parallel Commerce Street, which was converted earlier this month into southbound one-way road.

The change is part of a $36 million project that calls for narrowing Commerce and Main streets to make way for protected “green lane” bicycle paths, landscaping and widened sidewalks by summer 2018, Kurtz said.

The improvements are funded by the city, fuel revenue indexing and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.
