2 Raiders starters out for Sunday’s game at Tennessee

Updated September 23, 2022 - 2:20 pm

The Raiders ruled out wide receiver Hunter Renfrow on Friday for Sunday’s game at the Tennessee Titans.

He’s one of two starters listed as out on the final injury report of the week.

Renfrow suffered a concussion in Sunday’s overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals and has not cleared protocol.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman will miss his second straight game with an ankle injury. He didn’t practice this week.

Running back Josh Jacobs is listed as questionable after missing the past two practices with an undisclosed illness. He didn’t travel with the team when it departed for Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday afternoon.

Four other players were listed as questionable, including safety Tre’von Moehrig and center Andre James, who both missed last week’s game.

James got in limited practices Thursday and Friday, but was still wearing a red noncontact jersey after suffering a concussion in the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Moehrig got in a limited session Friday after missing the previous two practices with a hip injury suffered in Week 1.

Defensive tackles Neil Farrell Jr. and Bilal Nichols are questionable with shoulder injuries that limited their participation in Friday’s practice.

Coach Josh McDaniels said the team is prepared to rely on its depth, especially at wide receiver.

“(Davante Adams) obviously can move around the formation,” he said. “We’ve seen Mack (Hollins) move around the formation, too. Keelan (Cole) is going to do the same thing. Our tight ends are kind of versatile in that regard, too. We’ve tried to preach since we got here, let’s learn the concept, not one spot in the concept, because these things are going to happen a lot.”

The situation is similar at other spots where injuries might limit the Raiders’ depth.

“Same thing with our linebackers, safeties, etc.,” McDaniels said. “They can play different spots, and if you’re just focusing on one small part of the call or the scheme, then when you have to get put into a different spot, it’s almost like you have to learn it all over again.”

The Titans will be missing left tackle Taylor Lewan (knee) and star pass rusher Bud Dupree (hip).

Defensive back Ugo Amadi (ankle) and linebacker Ola Adeniyi (neck) are out, and rookie wide receiver Kyle Phillips is doubtful with a shoulder injury.

Old friend

Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing said he’s implementing the lessons he learned in that role for the Raiders in 2017.

He had been considered one of the game’s best quarterback coaches in 2015 and 2016 when he led Derek Carr to an MVP-caliber season, but his year running the offense didn’t go so well.

Downing said he has grown a lot since he was with the Raiders.

“Any time you are doing something for a second time, you gain experience,” he said. “You’re able to maybe anticipate some in-game things and deal with some relationships different than you did the first time around.”

Waller featured

Raiders star tight end Darren Waller will be featured on Tuesday’s new episode of “Real Sports” on HBO.

An outspoken advocate for substance abuse treatment and a recovering addict, Waller has partnered with his sponsor to help treat people in the underground tunnels of Las Vegas.

Those efforts will be highlighted on the show.

Headed to Canton

Two items from last week’s dramatic overtime game at Allegiant Stadium have been shipped to Canton, Ohio, for display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A game ball will mark the occasion of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray becoming the first player in NFL history with a rushing touchdown, passing touchdown, two-point conversion run and two-point conversion pass in the same game.

Byron Murphy Jr. will have his jersey displayed because his game-winning 59-yard fumble return was the longest to go for an overtime touchdown.
