2-year-old girl killed in North Las Vegas hit-and-run

A young girl was killed in a crash involving a single vehicle Sunday night in North Las Vegas, police said.

North Las Vegas Police officer Aaron Patty said the fatal crash occurred in the 3400 block of Thomas Avenue. Police received the call around 5:45 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene learned that a 2-year-old girl was struck and killed by a white van without side windows that fled after hitting the child. The girl's parents transported her to North Vista Hospital where she later died.

Patty said  the driver of the vehicle, described as a Hispanic man in his 40s with facial hair, likely knew that he had hit the child in the road before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses at the scene said that the girl may have been trying to cross the residential street at the time. It is unknown if the girl lived in the neighborhood, police said.

Police are investigating whether alcohol or drugs factored in this accident. They are searching for the suspect and no one is yet in custody.

No more information was immediately available.
