Critical crash sends a man to the hospital

A 31-year-old man was left in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after a crash in the central valley.

The crash happened just after 12:30 p.m., when a man on a scooter heading north on South Valley View Boulevard just north of Desert Inn Road lost control and began sliding sideways, police said. The scooter fell onto its side and ejected the rider, who was not wearing a helmet.

The rider was taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit with life-threatening injuries.

Police later said a large trail of oil that leaked from a black sport utility vehicle just north of where the rider lost control caused the crash.

Police said the driver confirmed he’d had mechanical difficulty before this collision.

Valley View is now open in both directions at West Desert Inn Road, the Regional Transportation Commission said.

Police are investigating the crash.
