Trekkies beam up to Las Vegas Hilton for stardate with destiny

Greetings “Star Trek” nerds and welcome to the annual Trekker/Trekkie convention at the Las Vegas Hilton. I remember you all from last year, with your zesty costumes and computer-speaking patterns. You were a blast to drink with, and I’m not even kidding.

5-year-old boy dies in crash

A 5-year-old Las Vegas boy was killed when the pickup he was riding in blew a front tire and spun out of control while pulling a recreational trailer, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said.

Ibo Turkish & Mediterranean Restaurant

Before I get started, I’ve got info for those who ask me about (increasingly rare) places that have live music during dinner: Ibo does, Tuesdays through Saturdays (which are the nights it serves dinner).

PROMOTING PROBLEMS

Here we go again. I asked to interview the singer for The Sounds, because I dig this little-known, neo-new wave band from Sweden. And tonight at the Hard Rock, they’re opening for No Doubt and Panic at the Disco.

Cannerys, Rampart promotion giving away more than $1 million

The Cannery, Eastside Cannery and the Rampart are giving away more than $1 million in cash and prizes this month in the “CCR Cash n’ Cool Getaways Swipe and Win Giveaways.” Tuesdays through Sundays this month, players earning 50 daily points are allowed one swipe, and every swipe is a winner. (Additional swipes can be earned on various days; check the rules.) At 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sunday, all three casinos draw for a total of $10,000 in cash and trips, including a $5,000 top prize. Players receive one electronic entry per 100 base points earned during the qualifying period, and all entries must be activated (after 5 p.m.) the day of the drawing.

Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow seems bored by repetition, judging by the first half-hour of his current Las Vegas Hilton run. That’s why, when it takes a crazy left turn, you wonder if he has completely lost his mind. And you applaud him for it.

Cugat and Company

Cuchi and Cugie.
Translation: Charo (let’s double that to “cuchi-cuchi”) and Xavier Cugat (“Cugie” to family, friends and four wives), who occupy a pair of photos in the modest but striking “Viva Las Vegas: A Photographic Retrospective of Images of Latino Entertainers” at the Sahara West Library. The collection of mostly performance portraits is culled from archives of the Las Vegas News Bureau.

Where the people go

You’ve probably been to Town Square. The shopping, dining and entertainment complex at the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard has been open for a year and half now, and legions of locals have checked it out.

Barney Frank, salary czar

In a free market, we’re so familiar with how prices are set — how manufacturers decide how much of a thing to make and what they can afford to pay for labor and raw materials — that we rarely even think about it.

A group of locals casino operators are planning to pool their sports book bets so their operations can handle bigger bets.

Sowerby reflects on health

Again I woke up covered in sweat, feeling hot, feverish and scared. As I tried to determine my whereabouts, a series of irregular loud bangs caught my attention. I had heard plenty of electronic buzzes, beeps and squawks during the previous few days, but there was something very different going on now. Between bangs I could hear laughter, mature at times, but mostly from young people.

What ever happened to road manners?

Drive your floppy-wheeled cart in front of someone at the shopping mall and you’ll likely say, “Oops!” and then sheepishly smile and apologize and maybe even comment on the weather.

Renew America Roadtrip spreads EV, green living awareness

Michael Craner and Maddy Gunawardana, organizers of Renew America Roadtrip, stopped in Las Vegas on July 28 as they made their way from New York to Los Angeles during “America’s first green charity drive coast to coast in an all-electric sports car.”
