Centennial blows by Coronado to win 34-0

Things went so right for Centennial’s football team Friday, that even when things looked bad, it turned out just fine.

Take Gerick Robinson’s play in the second quarter. The Centennial running back looked like he would be downed for a safety, danced his way out of trouble, ran down the length the field and nearly scored, falling a yard short.

The Bulldogs scored three plays later, one of five touchdowns in a 34-0 road win at Coronado.

“I told (quarterback Colton Tenney ) before the play, ‘This play is going to work. Just hand off to me and I’m going to break it.’” Robinson. “After the play, I couldn’t breathe, but it was definitely a play I’ll remember.”

It was that kind of night for Centennial (3-2), as the Bulldogs out-gained the Cougars, 405-70.

“It was just a workman-like effort today,” said Jordan Smith, who ran in two touchdowns. “Basically, we saw everything out there just like we had seen on film. Things were opening up pretty quick.

“Games like this give us a boost. We expected to come in and do this. Now we are looking to get some (league) wins and make the playoffs.”

Things got away from Coronado (2-3) quickly, as the Cougars fumbled the ball away on their first play from scrimmage. Centennial recovered the fumble on the Coronado 30, and marched in for a score six plays later.

On another play that turned the Bulldogs’ way just before halftime, Elijah Chianese hauled in a pass from Tenney, but was hit immediately. Chianese spun his way out of what looked like a sure tackle and raced to the end zone to complete the 40-yard pass and push the Centennial lead to 20-0 with 45 seconds left before halftime.

Tenney threw for 198 yards on 14 of 23 passing. Aaron Johnson caught five passes for 105 yards for Centennial, and Chianese finished with 52 yards on three catches.

Robinson said Centennial is hoping to use Friday’s dominant effort as a springboard to success heading into the rest of its Northwest League schedule.

“I feel it coming,” said Robinson. “This league is going to be hard, but I think we can get through it.”
