Ex-Rebel Scott in hot pursuit of top world ranking

By the mathematical wonder of the world ranking, Adam Scott could have stayed in The Bahamas this week and still moved to No. 1 in the world ranking provided three other players had an ordinary week at The Players Championship.

EDITORIAL: Paid time off takes a holiday

The city of Henderson has taken some criticism in recent weeks, and rightly so, by getting its financial house in order on the backs of its residents. The municipality is cutting services, increasing fees and might yet raise property taxes, rather than enacting much-needed changes in employee compensation. Giving new meaning to ‘one and done’

I don’t know Joey Nebeker. Never spoke to him. Short of glancing at the Boise State basketball media guide from last season, I wouldn’t have a clue what he looks like. He might as well be Joey Logano without the racecar.

Hunters vote to be social, to be outdoors

When the Nevada State Board of Wildlife Commissioners meets this weekend in Reno, it will have a full agenda to contend with, including big-game tag quotas for the 2014 hunting seasons and a possible change in the regulation defining legal black powder substitutes for use when hunting with muzzle-loading firearms.

Fishing Report, May 8, 2014

■ LAKE MEAD — Fishing has been fair despite windy conditions. Those fishing early in the morning have had the best success. While many anglers are still catching threadfin and gizzard shad for bait, mostly in the coves of Vegas Wash, an increasing number are reporting success with artificial lures. Stripers are hanging in about 30 feet of water near drop-offs. The majority of stripers being caught have been in the 1- to 3-pound range. Largemouth bass are still giving anglers success. Big fish honors at a weekend tournament went to an angler who reeled in a bass that topped 8 pounds. Drop shots and various lures in olive coloration have worked well.

Leftovers: Sam keeps draft drama to himself

At some point in the next couple of days, the attention is going to shift from who drafted Johnny Manziel to whether Michael Sam gets drafted at all. The former Missouri defensive lineman, who is in line to be the NFL’s first openly gay player, might not get drafted until Saturday.

Variety is the space of life, at least in broadening downtown

If the phrase “downtown arena” seems more of a fantasy after a new one broke ground on the Strip, downtown nonetheless has two ambitious entertainment projects going in with the slightly-less-sexy descriptive “Event Center.”
