Drapes can be more formal than curtains

Dear Gail: I’m just about finished decorating my living room, dining room and master bedroom. I want to soften my windows and add color, but I’m not looking for a valance. I’m getting overwhelmed when I go online and what the difference is between curtains and drapes. I just know I don’t want the old-fashioned draperies my mother had. — Torri

Greenhouse transplants should be moved gradually

Q: I started seedlings in a greenhouse and transplanted them into my raised beds. But they are not growing at all. It’s been two weeks, and two have died, but the rest have not continued to grow.

Retaining wall construction can be backbreaking labor

Q: It’s time to landscape my backyard, which is currently dirt. I have a 2-foot-high bluff where I’d like to put a retaining wall, but I’m uncomfortable with masonry work. I’ve seen stackable blocks in stores and wonder if they would be suitable because I plan only to go about 1½ feet high with the wall. Besides, I think it would add visual excitement to my yard.

Use trays to help organize, spruce up your home

If you went on a scavenger hunt for a tray in my home, you’d find one in every single room. In the 33 years I’ve worked in the world of interior design, some of the decorating foot soldiers I use to style my home have come and gone (anyone remember tassels?). But trays are here to stay. Here are my favorite ways to use trays in my home to keep my life organized and beautiful:

Science and technology giving outdoor power tools a Millennial twist

New battery-powered tools are compact, lightweight and easy to store. They share the flip-of-a-switch appeal of other portable devices. But instead of connecting you to the outside world, these improve the world outside your own back door.

LEFTOVERS: Tech coach happy to be mistaken for Gosling

Texas Tech football coach Kliff Kingsbury apparently is known for more than just his innovative offense. Supposedly, he bears a resemblance to some actor named Ryan Gosling that women seem to find attractive.

Big catch gives fish story happier ending

There is no shortage of tall tales on the bookshelves of fishing lore. Perhaps the most common are stories about the ones that got away, and they are probably the most frequently updated. Not far behind are big-fish stories followed by tales of precious time spent with special people, but among my favorites are those that combine reality with humor to create a picture of the near miraculous.

Fishing report, April 10, 2014

LAKE MEAD — Largemouth bass have been the active fish of the week. Most success has been found using various crankbaits working through about ten feet of water. Anglers are finding fair action for striped bass with live shad or anchovies. Catfish are becoming more active as well and can be found in the back of coves.
